In only its ninth year of operation, China Horse Club, had a Royal Ascot to remember. In concert with Newgate Farm and partners, China Horse Club's two runners State of Rest and Artorius were imperious. The former winning the time honoured £1,000,000 G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes and the latter storming to a dead-heat third in the £1,000,000 G1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes. Saffron Beach, bred by the club's European division, also raced away with the G2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes.

It was through Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum that Teo chairman of Teo A. Khing Design Consultants submitted his proposal for the Meydan Racecourse, a project that had been brewing for the last five years, and was selected to build his largest and most challenging project to date: a 100,000-capacity horse racing complex, with hotel, restaurants, a convention centre, royal enclosure and 1.6 km long grandstand with an IMAX theatre to capture camera finishes for the races.
